I can peer out of the study window and see out over the computer monitor out into the paddocks. I can see the little boys madly running around as the rain (yes, you read right!) has just started. If I look over to the right I can see Joie and Maddie having a bit of a race around their paddock (looking for the first muddy spot!) and over past the little boys I can see Vera and Trousers standing quite sedately with their backs to the wind and rain.
Bessie Merle has decided that it's time to curl up in (not in front!) the heater to the left of my chair. Millie has parked herself under the desk. Spikey-man is flat on his back with his paws in the air near the door. Matilda has the poohs and is not speaking to anyone and Lance has taken himself into "his" bedroom for a dog-nap.
Joseph has been put back into his stable as next door's mares have decided that they are in season and he has just discovered that he has a ..... well, you can guess that one!
It has certainly been quite a hectic weekend and both Evan and I are glad for the opportunity to have some time "off" just relaxing.
I had a very interesting discussion with a gentleman from NSW who rang to put some horses through Gallopers on Friday. This particular gentleman was a trainer and did his own trackwork and because he has just worked out that at the age of 60 he will no longer bounce when he hits the ground, has given it away. One thing about being in this type of work is that you get people with lots of opinions - some good, some bad, and some too conceited to know, but the one thing that this gentleman did say to me that did make some sense was that there is a problem with the over supply of horses and more importantly those horses pointed towards the yearling sales market.
I just wonder where it is all going to end. The lower end of the market is floundering as the higher end continues to escalate. Will there come a time when horse racing is a sport that only the rich can enjoy?
I can only hope not.
Helen.
