Christmas 2007

The dreaded Christmas Newsletter - 2007

What a year 2007 has turned out to be for all at Massie Lodge. Not only did we suffer the dreaded Equine Influenza that certainly brought us all to a screeching halt, but we finally got some dam filling rain after 2 years of drought.

The Equine Influenza outbreak certainly didn’t pick and choose its targets and it seemed to affect everyone who had any sort of interest in the Thoroughbred Industry.

In my mind, this certainly showed the true colours of the high profile personalities who play a large part in this industry – some good and some not so good and some down right ugly. It certainly was not a good time for the Industry with infighting and arguments across the disciplines. Still I guess it takes all types to make up this world that we live in and it certainly was a time for reflection for many people as to whether the would carry on doing what they love.

This rather large bump in the road certainly was a catalyst for us to make a decision; whether this was the industry for us to stay in … however, if you know anyone who has thoroughbreds or has something to do with them, once they get in your blood – that’s it, the choice is all over.

So, coupled with plenty of good rain the second half of the year, plenty of renewed enthusiasm and motivation, both Evan and I move on to 2008 and welcome new and return residents to Massie Lodge - offering them a special place to stay with lots of love and caring.

2007 was a good year for us with our foals with 4 healthy babies born at Massie Lodge – some on time, some not expected and some keeping to their own time schedule – which naturally played havoc for the poor foal watchers who had to make sure that there was someone watching the mares at all times!

Of course our big staff of 2 (yes, Evan and I!), were very glad for the end of that period. Still, we were very blessed with each of the babies born, that they were healthy, had good legs and temperaments to match.

2 fillies and 2 colts later, and finally some decent night’s sleep, we decided to let our mares sit tight and wait for an early cover next year, rather than try and fight the permit section of the DPI!

We are both keen to send Epiphany back to Conatus next year after seeing her colt (Harry). What a stunner!

Our boy Maz continues his holiday in Ballina, resting and recuperating from the tough 6 months he had waiting to get 1 run that was none too shabby for a first attempt. Of course, EI was then to appear and not only did Maz suffer from a bad cut to his eye from a horrendous storm that made its way through Ballina, he also had a bad reaction to both Vaccinations that he had to have.

We knew it was time for him to have some rest and relaxation away from the stable and he has been enjoying himself at Ballina for the past few weeks winding down.

Maz will go back to Phil Quinnell at Ballina after his break and hopefully on to a successful preparation. GO MAZ!

Bessie Merle (Curly Coated Retriever) decided that she wanted to join the pregnant thoroughbred ladies (mind you there was a very stressful 2 week period of time in between when she was in season and once again, sleep seemed to elude both Evan and I!) and gave birth to 2 beautiful pups early in December - a boy called Doc (after a manic call to Monika our vet in the middle of the night as Bess had a difficult birth) and a girl called Ruby.

Both babies have opened their eyes and are starting to wander around their box – interested in what’s going on (rather than just wondering when it’s feed time again!!). So now we have 6 dogs! … But that’s ok as there is plenty of love around for everyone!

So, as 2007 draws to a close and all the disasters from the year are now starting to turn into dim, dark memories, we are now looking forward to 2008. Onwards and Upwards!

To all of our clients, we would like to wish you a very happy Christmas and a very safe and happy 2008 that is filled with the continuation of chasing your dreams. Thank you so much for your continued support of us which has been very much appreciated indeed.

To all our friends and relatives who are rolling their eyes and saying that it’s typical that we couldn’t get Christmas Cards out on time and had to result to a dreaded “newsletter” – we wish you all lots of love and happiness and hope that we catch up with you somewhere in 2008! (Maybe we will do cards in time next year!!)

May 2008 be filled with healthy horses (and dogs!) and lots of winners!!

Love from Helen & Evan.

As The Weekend Finishes..

another week starts. Can you believe just how close it is to Christmas? We are just having a very quiet Christmas this year with the Massie Lodge canines and equines - which always isnt such a bad thing. Although we are expecting visitors around the 29th where we will have a full Christmas dinner then.

What a year 2007 has been, with the last 6 months full of Equine Influenza, drought breaking rain and an impossible wait with the DPI to move a horse 10km. Unbelievable.

Still we have had 4 healthy strapping foals, 2 healthy puppies so it has made these months very interesting indeed.

2008 is going to be a year of change - onwards and upwards!

The Massie Lodge Boys...

To say that we are wild about Harry (our new Conatus colt out of Epiphany) is an understatement! Harry's back legs have come good after a week in the stable with his mum and now each day both he and Pip come out and do the rounds of the front and house paddocks with Gossips and Jack.

What a babe and it was certainly worth the wait!

Tropical Warwick

We have enjoyed over 60ml of rain this last week and yesterday we were waiting for the skies to open again. Both Evan and I brought all the mares and their foals in early, fed them and tucked them in and then rushed into the house to have showers, boil the kettle and to get ready for the electricity to go off - as it so often does at this time of year.

Waiting, waiting ... waiting for the deluge to fall ... but what do they say? A watched pot never boils? And sure enough, this storm split in tow and we got the edge of it. I have to say however, after all of the rain last week, we surely would have been a quagmire after this storm had it of hit us.

But, Iam not complaining. All of the dams are just about full, there is plenty of green pick around for the horses and the house tanks are filling nicely.

Note to self: Next year get yourself a dryer! lol

Ruby and Doc

A week later and Bessie and her two charges are doing well. As you can see the pups are hardly lacking in the eating department with Doc reminding me very much of the large Brown dog when he was just a wee one. While Bess is very good with the two, she is torn between her two charges and being one of the Massie Lodge pack - i.e. going outside and having walks and swims and going witih mum and dad.

Weaning will start at Week 3, and while it doesnt finish for a few weeks after that, I am sure that Bess will be glad to get back to her normal duties - mouse hunting, frog catching etc etc.

I have always fed the Massie Lodge canines the BARF (Bones and Raw Food) diet (as proposed by Dr. Ian Billinghurst) and the pups will follow suit come weaning.

The two pups already have little personalities with Doc the outgoing, adventurous one and Ruby not so outgoing; its amazing even at Week 1 how their personalities are developing.

We have had to watch Matilda with the pups as she is fascinated with them.

Bessie Merle Delivers the Last Massie Lodge Baby for 2007!

Bessie Merle, beloved Curly Coat at Massie Lodge, delivered two beautiful black Curly Coat puppies last night after a mamoth delivery effort that took from 10pm through to 6.30am.

Both mum and pups are doing famously. Watch this space for more news!

Perfection Is.....?

I have to say that there is something perfect about waking up on Saturday morning (lol I know I say that about Sunday too!) knowing that you dont have to get into panic work mode ("what the hell am I going to wear? Jeans.... and .... !!), you know that the next two days are your own to do the things that make you happy.

For me, this morning was spent out with the girls and their foals, just being there, getting reaquainted with them; spending some time with Pip and her beautiful Conatus boy, Harry. What a treasure he is, just friendly, outgoing and a real pleasure to handle. I have to say that all these traits are typical of what dear old dad is passing down the line to his kids.

Bessie Merle continues to taunt us with her impending whelping and has been seen trying to get into the walk ins to build her nest.... I did spend some wonderful time with her this morning out on the verandah in the sun, having a cup of coffee and resting my hand on her tummy - what an experience that is... I can assure that there is something alive in there... the question that we are both asking is HOW MANY !!!??? (AAAAArgh!!!). You cant buy any experience like that anywhere. I am very blessed to have lived it with the horses and now with Bess.

Im sitting here in the study watching the two boys (Kenny Kinjite and Jimmy) in their heavily green paddock. Its just started to shower lightly and they have both taken off as if someone has lighted a match under them. Wow, what an awesome sight.

At the moment I have Pikey man to the left of me and Bessie Merle and her huge tummy to the right. Bailey is guarding the door in the corridor. Evan is outside in the loungeroom enjoying a Crownie or four watching the races (after coming in from feeding up).

God I love the weekend.

Helen. :)

I love this photo - Miss Pip (Epiphany) loves her boy very much and is a beautiful mum. The older girls certainly have it on the young ones.

Massie Lodge

has formally been pronounced "Resolved" from the DPI and we can now throw the doors open again. Its been amazing this past week trying to get Permits from the DPI to move horses around - actually amazing isnt the right word .... *@#$% ! Difficult was the first thing that came to mind.

In the meantime, all the broodmares and their babies ( 2 boys and 2 girls - how convenient!) are doing well with newest baby, Harry (pictured above with his mum, Epiphany) coming along in leaps and bounds every day. Talk about a sweetie and mum is very protective of her little boy, which is great to see. There has been great improvement in his back legs already so we are envisioning letting them out of their stable yard into the bigger yard for an hour or so tomorrow.

How nice was it being able to go to bed at a reasonable hour and not moving for 8 hours? Hmmm. It was very nice.

Bessie Merle continues to waddle around with her bundle and is becoming very uncomfortable with her stomach. Not much longer to go there so we will get all the sleep we can before the Curly Coat puppies arrive

We have been very blessed with 4 healthy foals - even after Equine Influenza. A big thank you to Monika for her guidance through the outbreak and the level of care she gave to all the broodies.

Well, its nearly 8.30pm and I really want to sit down and watch House. LOL

Be good!

Helen.

We're Just Wild About Harry!

And Harry (named because he is Kewl) makes the last of the Massie Lodge foals to be safely delivered. Well done Miss Pip, you did good girl.

AAAAAAAAAAAh...

Sunday... there is nothing like waking up and knowing that you dont have to rush anywhere or do anything too stressful. That is, however, if all the mares have had their babies and are safe with their mothers, trying to share their feeds (like Local News and her Conatus colt, Jack - pictured left).

Unfortunately for both Evan and I, Miss Pip (Epiphany) still has not had her Conatus baby and we are on Foal Watch duty and we are both fairly tired by this stage - however, we will continue to sit up and do shifts until she decides its the right time to have her baby!

We have been pretty much blessed with over 2 inches of rain over the period Thursday - Saturday and of course the property is a quagmire but there are no complaints in this household. Finally, all 4 dams are looking healthy and full of water and the paddocks are now sprouting nice summer grass (instead of weeds!). So, today being the first dry day for a little bit, it was spent loading the washing machine!

Friday saw a visit from our favourite owners and good friends, the Koch's and a good time was had by all chewing the fat (and drinking the wine!). A trip on Saturday morning to see Dirtiere at Paul Moody's and then out to dinner in Warwick on Saturday night.

Bits and Pieces

Maz - the poor wee boy has really had a bad time of it since being vaccinated for EI with a bad reaction to the serum and Maz hitting his eye after a severe storm made it's way through Ballina. It's time for Maz to have some time out of the stable and we are currently speaking with the DPI to find out what our options are (or aren't as the case may be) for getting him home or finding a reliable and trustworthy soul to look after him for a month down Ballina way.

Shorts - Has been put out into the spelling paddock for a month as she became shinsore after her first Barrier Trial.

Centenn - will be back on track next week at the Gold Coast. Go Bob!!

Hopefully Kenny Kinjite and Wee Jim will be on their way to Paul Moody's - travel permits notwithstanding.

Bessie Merle - the countdown is now on for darling Merle. We are expecting her to give birth around December 3. Watch this space!

Well, time for me to go and put my feet up and relax a little before work starts again tomorrow.

Life is good - isn't it!

Helen.

Miss Pip ... still waiting
