The Time Traveller's Wife

This is the book that has captured my attention for the past few days ... in fact I couldnt put it down!

Following is a precis of the story by Wikipedia. This book is being made into a movie with Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana (cant wait for that!):-

The novel tells the story of Henry DeTamble (born 1963), a librarian at the Chicago Newberry Library, and his wife, Clare Abshire (born 1971), an artist from a wealthy family who makes paper sculptures. When 20-year-old Clare meets 28-year-old Henry in 1991, he has never seen her before, although she has known him most of her life. Clare's past is still in Henry's future. Henry begins to experience the events in Clare's childhood at the same time that he experiences life with the adult Clare in the present. In the novel, the future cannot be changed, and many tragic events are foreshadowed in the past.

Henry has a very rare genetic disorder known as Chrono-Displacement that causes him to involuntarily travel through time. He is unable to control when he leaves, where he goes, or how long his trip will last. His destinations are tied to his subconscious, as Henry most often travels to places he has visited or will eventually visit. Very often, Henry is taken back to the moment his mother died in a car accident he survived, and is forced to observe the car crash again and again. Certain things like stress can trigger time travel for Henry. It is described as being similar to epilepsy or a panic attack, though on brain imagery, his brain shows patterns similar to those who are schizophrenic. He uses running as a way of keeping calm and remaining in the present. But more importantly, he needs to be able to run fast to escape any unknown situations he could travel back (or forward) to at any given time.

Henry cannot take anything with him into the future or the past. Even fillings in his teeth are left behind. He always "arrives" naked and must work hard while "away" to find clothing, shelter, and food without getting beaten up or arrested. He amasses a number of survival skills including pickpocketing, lock-picking, and expert fighting skills. He learns many of these skills from older versions of himself, either when the older self is time-traveling into his own past, or when his older and younger selves' time-traveling coincides.

Henry time travels into Clare's childhood and adolescence many times, starting in 1977 when she is six years old. On one of his early visits, he dictates to her a list of the visits he will make to her; she writes these dates into a diary so she can expect his visits. As an adult, when all of the visits are through, she gives the list to him to memorize so that he will know them when he returns to her in her past. This is an example of a predestination paradox, since the knowledge of the dates forms a causal loop, with Henry having got the list of dates from Clare when she was an adult, and Henry having memorized the list and dictated it to Clare on one of his first visits in 1977. During one of Henry's visits, he inadvertently reveals that he and Clare will be married in the future. His last visit takes place on her eighteenth birthday in 1989 where he and Clare make love for the first time, and then they are separated for two years until they finally meet in real time for both of them.

Clare and Henry get married, but have trouble conceiving a child because of his genetic disorder. After six miscarriages, Henry gives up and has a vasectomy. Later, a past version of Henry travels to the future and makes love to Clare and she becomes pregnant and carries the child to term. They have a daughter named Alba, who is diagnosed with the same disorder. Before she is born, Henry travels to the future and meets Alba at ten years old. Alba reveals to Henry that he is to die when she is five years old.

Years later, Henry time-travels to Chicago on a very cold winter night, where he is unable to find shelter. He experiences hypothermia and develops frostbite. When Henry returns to his 'present', his feet must be amputated. The story has stressed that his ability to run is, for Henry, a vital survival skill, and it is not long before Henry time-travels into the middle of the Michigan woods during deer season and is fatally shot by Clare's brother. He returns to the present and dies in Clare’s arms.

Clare is devastated by Henry's passing, and feels unable to live her life without him. Although Alba sees him from time to time, he and Clare seem never to be able to see each other. She finds a letter from Henry describing an experience he had with her in her future, when she is an old woman. Henry doesn't want Clare to wait for him, but he wants her to know that they will see each other again and that love knows no boundaries and transcends time and death. Clare lives to old age, and is visited by Henry for a final time. (Wikipedia)
Don't you love it when people feel compelled to share their colds with everyone at the office? Working at the farm, I am the last in line to get the wog that is going around and it has visited everyone (no one has been missed!).

So, this weekend I have been laying low, dabbing my sore red nose, sneezing, blowing my nose, coughing and spluttering and generally just feeling pretty off. Iam not even contemplating that this is going to go to my chest, it's just a head cold, it's just a head cold ... lol (Where are the Codrals?)

Sunday, today, however, has been a pretty busy day and I have had to rally and help Evan move all the horses around. This has taken most of the morning, so when we finally get inside I jump up on the lounge and pick up the latest book that I'm reading (more about that later).

I must admit that I have been too tired to blog the last few weeks with the impending breeding season, work has been getting busier and busier ... we have had visitors (my brother Neil has been up for a few days) and the equine residents have been coming and going, Adam has visited once or twice and this has been keeping Evan pretty busy.

It was nice this afternoon (after the Codrals had kicked in) going around and speaking to all the equines and giving them all cuddles.

We have moved both Harry and Jackie (pictured below) from the yard up the front to the yard at the back of the house and both boys have been getting used to their paddock and to the fact that they are surrounded with other horses.

Gossy, Pip and Maddey have been moved to the big yard at the side of the house so that we can keep an eye on Gossy and let the girls out to pick around the house - they will enjoy that. Monika is due next weekend to come and scan Joie and Pip to see where they are in their cycles.

I was standing just cuddling Gossy and to my surprise her stomach started to move .. it was fantastic (although the look on Gossy's face was "Uh oh, here we go again") - she is 3 months out now and can keep a good eye on her. Maddey was surprised to see Daisy again and quickly put her in her place.

Lucy and Jimmy are now down the back paddock, enjoying the pick and the dam. We will give Jim a few months and then probably send him down to Phil.

Joie and Sweetie are now up next to the house with Joie leaving in the next 2 weeks to go and be served by Tycoon Ruler. Sweetie will then go down with Nottie and Southern.

Time for me to go back up on the lounge, watch a movie and continue to blow my nose.... A red nose is such a good look!

(Pictured to the left are Harry - behind Jackie - surveying their new paddock. It always amazes me to see horses released into a new paddock. They all stretch out and gallop and look absolutely gorgeous.
These two boys were no different.

Two very different types of boys but wow, they certainly know how to stretch out and gallop.

Just beautiful.

Dirtiere

With the breeding season almost upon us, the time came for the Dirty Girl (Dirtiere) to leave Massie Lodge for a little bit and venture up to Egmont Park to be served by their stallion, Over.

So, we couldnt let the girl go covered in mud so it was time for a bath, shampoo and brush out the mane and tail - poor old Dirty wondered what the hell was going on! Im not sure who got the bath?

Miss Pip gets her man

The lovely Miss Epiphany will be going back to Conatus (pictured above) this year. We're pretty happy with the way Master Harry is turning out - he certainly is a chip off the old block!

Welcome Back ...

To Johnny (Below, "Too Fast Too Good") and Lexie (Below, Viscount Filly) who have come back to Massie Lodge for a well earned rest: Johhny after winning at Toowoomba and Lexie after an education preparation. Adios to dear Storm (Above) who is going back into work after a long break.

Welcome!

To new Massie Lodge Resident, Fourteen Red (aka Lily) who has come to us for a month or so before heading down to Victoria.

She is a sweet girl, even though she is just off the track. She is now in a paddock with Katie and Joannie.

Maz ...

Is home. After pulling up with some breathing issues after his last race, both Evan and I decided that it was time to bring the boy home for a long rest.

Sometimes a picture speaks a thousand words...

Maz - Grafton This Saturday

Maz is back in action this Saturday at Grafton (non Tab meeting) over 1200.

Do I seem a little less excited? Hmmm perhaps a little. Yet another bad barrier (13) has been drawn and I guess we soon have to be asking ourselves if he does no good is it time to bring him home to start the rest of his life and give wee Jimmy a chance at racing?

He showed so much that time at Lismore when he placed third and after his disasterous run at Ballina, while forgiving him a bad run, you have to really face the facts that perhaps its just not meant to be.

Perhaps Iam being just being very negative and maybe someone should just give me a swift kick up the caboose to stop me thinking this way, but with training costs, you have to come to the realisation that not every horse is a Lohnro in the making.

Yes, I am thinking negatively but I would like to think that Iam being realistic with Maz and the terrible luck he seems to have drawing a barrer.

It doesnt mean that I love him any less; in fact I know that I love him all the more every time he takes to the track.

Oh well, let's not jump the gun just yet. (I will go and have some Chocolate and buck myself up!)

GO MAZ!
P.S: Short Pants is racing also at Grafton this weekend. Watch this space!

OK I Admit It!

The TV has been tuned into Channel 7 (and when we got sick of Sandy Roberts, changed it over to SBS!) and we have been watching the Olympics for most of the weekend. I could say it was because, once again Mother Nature insisted that it made more sense to be inside than outside - so, after doing all the things that needed to be done outside, it was a case of heading inside, putting another log on the fire, finding a good spot on the lounge and veging out!

The men's road race was certainly a highlight and was most exciting come the end of the race. The women's road race is currently on - and they are riding the circuit in the rain: not much fun.

We actually saw some of the team Dressage competing which was terrific although Im not sure how much Simon Marshall knows about the finer points of dressage!

This week has seen Adam come out to Massie Lodge and trim the yearlings feet (which took most of the morning) and he is due to come out late next week to start the trims all over again.

Monika made a rescue visit on Saturday as Bessie Merle decided to ask the "ultimate question" to Matilda and lost the argument. Luckily the injuries sustained were not serious, but still require some nursing and antibiotics. Matilda, sorry, Her Majesty, Matilda is still leader of the clan even at 10 years of age and Bessie Merle who is half her age will have to settle for Lady-in-Waiting for the time being. Bessie Merle, obviously being the broodbitch thinks that its time for her to have the Royal Scepte - however, Matilda does not agree.

Kenny Kinjite (Kinquoz) gets his first race start on Monday at Murwillumbah (Race 3) with Jamie Quinnell riding.

Watch this space for young Maz.

Moony Man has moved from the stable of Natalie Hole and is now under the expert care of Greg Kennedy at the Sunshine Coast where he should finally find his feet. Go the Moon Man!

All in all its been a quiet weekend and its the quiet weekends where Evan and I just hang out together that seem to be the best ones ever.

Happiness is.

Don't You Just Hate It When ..

You walk out of the office, house - whatever and you need to be on your way somewhere - your arms are full of bags, jumpers etc and you get to the car and dump everything on the front passenger seat. You shut the door and start to walk around to the other side of the car to get in and you shriek in horror as you see your back tyre is not as it is. Fact is you can press your finger into the tyre its that low.

AAArgh! Luckily there is an air compressor at the farm so it can get you to one spot and hopefully the Tyre place at Allora hasnt shut its doors by the time you get there!

I thought I was stretching the friendship with the tyre but it got me to Allora and thankfully the nice man was just sitting there, browsing the net waiting to close up.

But wait! My wallet is sitting at home, snug and warm where I left it in my overcoat on Sunday after coming home from the pub. AAAArgh! (lucky for me I didnt get stopped by the police on the way home!.

For those of you wondering was I stranded in Allora until I could get hold of Evan, let me put your thoughts to rest. The lovely man in the tyre shop had our details on file (as we had been there before) and said that Evan could come and pay him tomorrow.

Now you dont get that sort of service in the city do you?

Go Go Gossy!

After a very cold and blustery day yesterday with the wind coming off the Arctic Caps (Seafood Marina washed down with a couple or more good glasses of Chardy last night), today turned out to be a beautiful day - mind you it was after a very cold start of -4 (bbrrrr!)

So delighted with the day were both Evan and I that after hurridly doing the 14 loads of washing and the usual clean up of a Sunday around the house ( more like a very bad impression of Martha Stewart), we retired to the side verandah and had morning tea, just sitting in the sun (without any wind) enjoying the silence. After which. Evan and I rounded up the canines and went for a walk around the property to visit all the equines - not for any specific reason rather just to say hello and give them a cuddle. When we came to the "ladies" (and I use that term loosely!) I was on my own. For some strange reason Gossy (Local News) does not care for the male species and I was quite surprised that we didnt have to play our usual game of zig and zag.

As is normal with the ladies, I always approach Pip first and start to make a fuss of her and its when Iam doing that I can gauge what sort of mood madam is in. Standing and making a fuss over Pip, Pip became agitated and to my surprise Gossy was on final approach to where I was standing.

Seeing that I was being summonded for a cuddle, I left Pip and went over to her Majesty where scratching behind the right ear and long strokes down her back was the order of the day.

Gossy's winter coat has really started to fall out (and naturally ended up all over me!) and she is really starting to bloom.

Mind you after glancing over her wither I could see Miss Pip standing with her bottom lip dragging on the ground - so it was time to go over to the lady-in-waiting and give her some attention.

I always feel that Sundays have a different feel to them - its not like Saturday that is spent rushing around and getting things done (or going into town for the obligatory cup of coffee!). The pace seems to slacken and you can really enjoy each and every hour that you have.

Why cant it be Sunday every day of the week? lol

What's Going On ..

There's always something going on at Massie Lodge - be it with the canines, the equines, the humines or the avines (avines being the peach face parrots that keep insisting to live - I am sure that Nigel No-Leg is at least 10 years old and his partner, Missy would be about 8).

We have been braving the "Warwick Winter" and each day we hope that that westerly wind will not be blowing. We have had some really low days where its overcast, the wind feels like its come straight off the Arctic caps and you have the rain scuds that seem to keep everything just damp and miserable - with no real rain falling, just these horrible 5-10 min episodes that just make you want to crawl right under the doona and stay there for the duration of winter.

I dont know how Evan does it every day - and I dont know how he continues to keep wearing shorts out in this weather! I have worked out that if you wear at least 5 layers you can at least stand out in the worst Mother Nature can serve. Thank God for my car heater that seems to defrost humans in no time whatsover.

Even the Canines choose inside to outside in this weather - they are not stupid are realise that the lounge is pretty warm and comfy compared to braving the elements!!

The horses continue to weather the winter and all have very thick winter coats. All are looking fabulous with big hairy tummys. The older ladies, Pip and Goss are doing fantastic - both sporting a woolly jacket over their huge stomachs. I can see that Pip is trying to keep Goss company by pretending she is pregnant! These two ladies are firm friends and you cant have one without the t'other.

Comings and Goings

August is the month where some of our residents will be off to see their respective male friends: Joie is off to see Tycoon Ruler and Dirty has a date with Over. Two very handsome young men. An exciting time for both girls.

Balls (Ballasario) will be returning into work next week. Storm will be heading back into the stable as well. Lexie (Viscount Filly) will be returning for a spell next week. Meggsie has been sold on up north and left Massie Lodge last week.

Once again I have the dogs with me in the study: Pikey under the desk, Bessie Merle in front of the heater, Ruby and Doc playing with an old sock that they found and Matilda waiting patiently for me to move and give her some dinner.

I can hear Evan in the kitchen about to start cooking his specialty dish, Seafood Marinara ... yummm and there is a very nice bottle of Chardy in the fridge just waiting to be opened and shared.

Not a bad life, dont you think?

Reading ...

After spending a glorious couple of hourse browsing through the Warwick Library, I found 2 of Bryce Courteny's book that I just had to read after enjoying his book, Whitethorn.

I read this book in 2 days. It was just honest, down to earth and I couldnt put it down.

The following is about the book in Bryce Courteney's words:-

It tells the story of eleven Australian Vietnam Veterans and one ex-member of the North Vietnamese Army who are thoroughly disenchanted by the way they have been treated since their return to civilian life and decide to take revenge. In effect a dirty dozen, suffering from the effects of Agent Orange and a whole heap of psychological disorders, they're a pretty hopeless bunch until they reluctantly recruit a woman to their ranks. It's funny, it's sad, serious, mad and an unexpected book. If you have a Vietnam Vet in your family, or you were unfortunate enough to have spent time in Vietnam yourself, whether Australian or American, you should probably read Smoky Joe's Cafe.

Im now about 3/4 of the way through Bryce Courtney's book, Matthew Flinders Cat. What a great book about life as it when you are a drunk in Sydney. This book just tells it like it is.

In the words of Bryce Courteney:-

This is the story of a drunk, a boy and a cat. Billy O'Shannessy, once prominent in law circles, is now on the street where he sleeps on a bench underneath a window of the State Library on the sill of which rests a bronze statue of Matthew Flinders' cat, Trim. Ryan is a ten-year-old, a street kid heading for all the usual trouble and whose mother is a heroin addict. The two meet and form an unlikely and often difficult friendship. Appealing to the boy's imagination by telling him the story of the circumnavigation of Australia told through Trim's eyes, Billy is drawn deeply into Ryan's life and the Sydney underworld. Over several months the two begin the mutual process of rehabilitation. 'Matthew Flinders' Cat' is a modern-day story of a city, it's crime, the plight of the homeless and the politics of greed and perversion. It is also a story of the human heart, with an enchanting glimpse into our past from the viewpoint of the famous cat. It has not been an easy book to write (they never are) but in this one I have touched on some of the problems that confront us living in the modern age, but perhaps we would rather not acknowledge.I hope you enjoy Matthew Flinders’ Cat and I look forward to your feedback.

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY ...

To all Massie Lodge Thoroughbred Residents
and to all Thoroughbreds everywhere!

It's a pretty scary thought to think that the weanlings are now yearlings - yipes!

Get Well Soon Katrina Partridge!

For those of you who know Miss Katrina, most well known in the Thoroughbred Industry, she has been in St. Vincent's Private Hospital for the last 20 odd days fighting Pancreatitis (wrong spelling?) and also had her Gall Bladder out last night.

It's not much fun being laid up sick and it's even worse when you are in hospital far away from home from your favourite boy and your animals.

GET WELL SOON MISS KATRINA, WE'RE ALL THINKING OF YOU AND SENDING YOU LOTS OF LOVE AND HEALING!!

Finally Maz Gets a Run

Maz had a run at Ballina last Tuesday. Unfortunately I couldnt get there due to being back at work, however, I slipped out from the farm and went to the well patronized (lol ... I was the only one there!) TAB at Oakey.

Evan, however made the 3 and a half hour journey down to Ballina for the race. Iam sure that he regretted the effort after Maz's behaviour in the race. Granted he had barrier 123 of 123 and it was a Heavy 10 track. Here is Evan's account of the race:-

Maz was looking very good before the race, Phil was confident he'd go well. He was on the toe in the mounting enclosure, and appeared ready to run. Jamie deliberately pulled him back at the start to try to give him some cover & time to settle, however the leaders got away on him a bit. When Jamie asked him to go as the field turned off the back, Maz just wanted to hug the fence which caused Jamie to have to work hard on him to get him going. The horse who eventually ran 4th, was behind Maz at the 600m and circled the field, however despite Jamie's urgings, all Maz wanted to do was get to the inside. On straightening, again Jamie endeavoured to get Maz to the outside, but he wanted to lay in. This will be obvious on replays, with Maz's head on the near side caused by Jamie tugging so hard on the reigns. Jamies eased up on him the last 100m as he had had enough by then.

Jamie thinks he needs a little further, and remember, he hadn't had a run for over 5 weeks, so he will be better for today's outing. I watched 4 races at Ballina this afternoon, and listened to one on the radio, and not one horse made up ground to finish in the placings that I saw or heard. It may have been different later in the day, however you had to be on pace, close to the fence to have any hope.

Phil will look for a 1400m-1500m maiden for him in a couple of weeks. What he needs is to draw inside so the jockey can get him up closer to the lead, an impossible ask from the outside barrier at Ballina from the 1250m start. He seemed to pull up okay, will wait for a report tomorrow morning.

Where there is life, there is hope.
