that the weather is on the change just by running your hands over one of the horses backs - by that I mean they are all starting to shed their winter woolly coats and all of their hair ends all over the human that is silly enough to do just that!
Take Maxwell this morning.
I thought I would give the young lad a bit of a "spring clean" just to get him used to people fussing over him, i.e. using a brush, a curry comb, brusing his mane etc etc. Young Max was all for it, problem was, so was wee Jimmy - he wanted to be done the same time as Max and was forever sticking his head under my arm or pushing Max away trying to be the centre of attention. Talk about pushy!
I managed to give Max a good go (after about 5 mins he had had quite enough attention, thanks very much!) and it seemed that most of his winter woolly coat ended up all over me and Bessie Merle (who had parked herself downwind of Max!). Maybe I will leave that to a day where there is not so much wind?
I was having a good look at young Maxwell this morning.... Maxwell is nearly the same size as Joseph (pictured above, who is a good year older than him). Max is going to be a big boy when he grows up!
Yuk! Time to come in and have a shower.
Good news about the Diva (Diva Gold) - Diva has now been sold and will be going straight to Raheen Stud for a date with Stromberg Carlson next week.
Joie and Mads will be going to Irish Royal in the next few weeks. Iam not disappointed with that choice for Mads or Jo. Irish Royal is getting plenty of winners around the traps and his foals are just cracking types. This bloke is very underated. If you want a horse to race, send your mare to Irish.
Sweetie and Libby are continuing on their wobbling ways ... and will be brought down closer to the house in the next few weeks where they will take up the job of being the "Lawnmowers" until they have their babies. Sweetie has promised me that this one will be a filly ... but I dont trust Sweetie at all!
Can you imagine a clone of Sweetie? Oh p-ulease, dont go there!
Libby is absolutely blooming and let me feel her tummy today ... bubs was moving awkwardly while mum was trying to eat. Libby's foal will be the last crop of Dust In The Wind's who was euthanised a month or so ago after a paddock accident.
I have had some very interesting discussions with different breeding people about which stallions are the "right" ones for our mares.
I was told that for Sweetie (Sweet Air by Air de France out of Clearly Best) she should go to 1) Conatus 2) Show a Heart 3) Encores 4) Dantibes 5) Telesto 6) Private Agenda (where she went 2 seasons ago resultant Wee Jimmy) and number 7) Fouardee.
I have to say that I do like those choices (especially Show a Heart but who is way too expensive for our budget), and am intrigued with the choice of Foardee. Hmmm.
For Libby, (Miss Independence by Euclase out of Declaration) I was told that she was too "difficult" to match, however, if she went to Mister Kwila then she would produce an excellent Equestrian horse. Hmmmm
Let's just get these babies born safely and healthily before we worry about that.
Helen.
