My little filly, Pix - full sister to Harry and daughter of Miss Pip broke her neck in February of this year. To say both Evan and I were horrified would not be close to it.
I, by chance, found her in her paddock lying down and she had blood all over head. She managed to get up and we get her over to the house stable and got Eric over in an instant.
Have you ever seen Wiley Cyote stand up after being hit from an anvil falling from a cliff - his eyes would bulge and would be spinning in opposite directions. This was Pixie.
Thanks to Eric's quick work and intravenous drugs, the trauma in her head settled down pretty quickly and the fact that she was interested in eating was all a good sign. However, we were told by Eric that Pix would have to stay in the small stable yard for 3-6 months till healing of her verterbrae that was broken commenced healing.
So, we brought Harry and Buster up next to her to keep her quiet and happy and the first 2 weeks would be make or break for my girl.
Keeping a horse in a stable and quiet for 3 months is very difficult, however, Pix was a good patient and was spoilt rotten! After 3 months she was allowed out into the small yard outside which she enjoyed immensely after being in a small yard for 3 months.
Its now 5 months after she did herself the damage and she is now in the paddock next to the house with her favourite brother Harry - who she adores.
What is in Pix's future? I dont know at this stage - she is the best bred filly on the farm - maybe when AI comes in we can get her to become a broodmare... I dont know, I'm just happy that she is still alive.
