Trousers and Vera in their paddock. Posted by Picasa

Funny...

you know, how time demands to march on when we want it to stand still so that we can have some time to think and feel and come to terms with whatever is on our minds. Even though we go through some terrible and tragic times through our lives, day insists on following night and we must get up and dust ourselves off and continue on even though we have no motivation to move on to the next day.

I guess that's how we have been feeling since the passing of Lily. Getting up, breathing, doing the things that we have had to do. However, the other horses still demand to be fed, their water bowls continue to have to be filled up, the dogs still demand dinner and attention and Caramel's preparation still demands Evan's full attention.

I posted something very early on in this blog about "the eyes having it"... Lily knew that her time in this life was short on Wednesday night and I could see that in her eyes. I knew that she might not last the night and she knew that I knew. Lily's eyes were all so knowing, yet she tried with all her heart to beat whatever it was that overcame her. She was a very brave girl. We are both still very sad about losing our girl, still our life here at Massie Lodge continues on even though she has left us.

Shorts has been a little beside herself yet, I observed that she had started to distance herself from Lily in the few days leading up to her passing. Animals are such knowing creatures aren't they? They leave humans way behind.

We have had some good news in amongst the bad - Both Sweetie (Sweet Air) and Libby (Miss Independence) are 15 days positive to their respective stallions (Pure Theatre and DITW). Nanna continues to be a bit of a mystery as to whether she is in foal, however, we should have something more definitive news for her in the next week. Nanna has started teaching Billy to stand on his own two feet (or 4 hooves as the case may be), and has started to teach him some independence at feeding times. We have been giving him his own bowl just away from Nanna, so he learns to eat on his own. More often we are seeing them separated in the paddock, however, I think that when Sweetie comes home with wee Jimmy, they might sort themselves out a bit more and Nanna will become part of the herd, which is how she likes to be rather than on her own.

Sunny, Gracie, Cindy and Joey are all doing well, in fact they are all doing very well - mud notwithstanding! Joey has decided that she likes to get rid of her fly veil at least once a day, a bit like a compulsive game of hide and seek for us humans! Iam sure that I can hear her sniggering when I finally find the bloody thing, covered in mud etc. and I have to wash it and then put it back on her. I do have to mention that young Gracie is looking like she is in foal, lol.

Charlie, Oscar and Throb are also doing very well in their paddock with Oscar needing some sort of fly veil as the flies tend to like him. Now this is easy to say, but to actually get the bloody thing on him is another matter.

Lenny and Jakey are doing well.. and have really come on. I do feel very guilty as I havent really spent much time with them as I had been focusing all my time with Lily...

Caramel is coming on in leaps and bounds and has been wearing a bit in ready for the big day, lol. Evan is wondering who he can contact about Worker's Compensation as it is an on going occurence for those two to have an altercation and for Evan to fall over and/or be dragged across the paddock...... He keeps telling me that it isnt malicious behaviour, rather her acting out of fright! I think I'll leave him to it.

Vera and Trousers will be brought up to be the fulltime mowers tomorrow. Its been a case of having to bring in the big artillery with all the grass around the place, however, Iam not complaining, rather just saying that it now needs the "professionals" to get the job done. They have both flourished down the back in their own paddock. However, it will be nice to see them around the place again.

Zandrea, Queenie, Southern and Eric the Horse are doing really well in the big paddock, with a full dam and nice round bellies on the lot of them.

Tomorrow sees some time off for the humans at a Christmas lunch at Clifton pub and then a Christmas dinner at the local hall... if Evan can move at all after todays battle with Caramel. Ah, to be 25 again! lol

Sod of The Week...

Just when you thought it was safe to put a roast lamb in the over and for it to cook all the way through without the power going off - think again!

Yes Ergon Energy head up the list for SOTW and are very close to winning the Sod of The Year Award for 2005. Sorry, but they are really useless twits and have very lowservice levels comparable to Telstra (which is saying something). Thursday night was a beauty for us with lack of power. The power went out for 3 hours in the afternoon and came on as I arrived home from work (I would like to also add that I had to detour through Clifton from Toowoomba because of the power lines that crashed down onto the road - add on an extra 40 minutes to the trip). By the time I got home at 6.30pm, power had been restored. Evan and I thought that we could settle down to a nice meal and a quiet night. Not to be so. At 7pm the transformer on the pole outside of Leo's (our neighbour) place had blown, so no power at ALL that night. Apparently, according to Ergon Energy the crews came out at 1am to fix the transformer. This was after I had to have a wash in the bathroom sink with the warm water from the Thermos that Evan keeps in such an emergency. Dinner, instead of being a nice piece of veal was a cold cornbeef sammy with some sauce.

This was also followed on Friday by 4 trips of the power (on, off - on, off - you know what I mean). This was enough for me to get riled up and give their customer service people a serve with a demand for Escalation. I have been told that Iam to be contacted by a Customer Relationships Manager on Monday - I cant wait. The person that I spoke to on Friday told us that we should get a back up generator - my comment was, if the electricity supply was more reliable, we wouldnt have to buy a generator that runs on diesel (which is at a premium price!).

Why is it that Customer Service people always say, they "Understand", when in fact they absolutely have no idea whatsoever? This woman kept saying it to me... and the more she said it to me, the more it got my hackles up and made me annoyed. She would never had understood that Evan needed to shower on Thursday as he had been digging a grave for Lily in very hot weather and stank!

Well, time for me to hit the hay and read my book. I am sorry for the lack of postings on my blog in recent times, but I didnt have the heart for it, it just hurt too much ... however, I hope to fix that up now that things are a little more "normal" (whatever that is!).

Helen.

After a very brave fight, Miss Lily passed away this morning and has been set free of her illness. RIP my beautiful baby, finally.

A Lovely Lazy

Sunday - isnt that something that we all hope for after a traumatic week of hussle and bussle? Today was definitely at slow pace for us. In fact I woke up at 9am to Evan's dulcet tones screaming at Caramel. lol. I wandered down to see Lily and Shorts after a very yummy breakfast of croissant and jam and took my coffee with me. Big mistake and Shorts was after it (does this filly think she is a human?). Sweet Lily was out over the back of the yard having a pick and not game to come anywhere near me in case I came armed with my jug of Weetbix and syringe.

Actually today was a chance for me to catch up and clear my washing lounge (which was disappearing under the weight of all the washing!) and to finally finish Patricia Cornwell's latest installment in the Dr. Kay Scarpetta series - "Predator". Talk about a disappointment. I sometimes think that the very successful writer's lose their edge when they are writing a series. They follow a strict formula and dont deviate from it which can produce a story that is stale and boring. There were so many loose ends at the end of this book, I really felt that the story was not completed. Yeah I know what you are thinking, all will be tied up in the next book. Her last installment, "Trace" was left incomplete as well. Some one should tell Patricia Cornwell to get her mind back on her plots and to tie up all the loose ends!

I should be a Book Reviewer, dont you think? lol

Caramel is coming along well and is overcoming all sorts of obstacles with Evan, mind you it can get pretty scary to see her battling wits with him. Its not that she has a mean streak, she is just frightened and needs lots of reassurance before accepting and learning new things. Next on the list is to get a bit in her mouth. She now is let out after work for some free grazing and it has made a huge difference to her to have this freedom. Its going to be a long process to get a bit in her mouth, but I think that she trusts Evan enough to let him do this.

This week sees the arrival of Kwila's Ambition back to Massie Lodge from Victoria to be served at Lyndhurst. It will be nice to see Kay again, if only for a short time. Also Iam sure a visit from Chris will be on the cards as well (not to mention going back to work!).

Hooroo until next time!

Gracie, aka Tamerett Lass and Joey's best friend. Yes, she has quite a tummy on her! Posted by Picasa

Joey aka Joie de Victorie starting to put some pud on now which is terrific. In this photo she is relatively clean, that is until the rain from yesterday and she is now covered in mud. lol Posted by Picasa

Cindy Lauper aka Lightning Edge. Came to us very light on... but is certainly having a good time in Rosie's paddock with Joey, Sunny and Gracie. Posted by Picasa

Oscar, aka Tannerung Baluk. Oscar is a real sweetie and is now starting to get a belly on him with all the lovely grass. He will be staying a bit longer with us here at Massie Lodge. Posted by Picasa

Charlie Farley, aka Time Legend. Hasnt our former baby taken off and just grown up? Look at the size of his hindquarters and shoulders - HUGE! Charlie's owner is very keen for him to go to Wadham Park in early January and then hopefully on to a career in Hong Kong. Now, I remember when Charlie when he was just a wee youngster. We'll miss him when he goes on his way out into the world. Posted by Picasa

'Tis The Season....

Oh p-ulease no, please let's not talk about the fact that Christmas is only weeks away. It's just way to scary a notion to deal with at the moment!

Our cover girl this post is the ever delightful Miss Short Pants.

We received a further 25mls last night after a most amazing storm that seem to start right on top of our house at about 11pm. Naturally both Millie and Matilda were petrified and spent a good deal of the night either in Evan's built in wardrobe or between the bedside table and the bed! Iam definitely not complaining about the fact that we are walking around with mud all over us and the horses, well.... the usual story, when there is mud - we MUST roll! Our normal practice is to send out photos to our owners with our accounts and unfortunately all 10 of them were covered from head to toe in mud. I must say though, it was a nice change to be able to send photo's out showing just how green and lush it is at the moment.

Miss Lily continues to be stable in her condition with Chris arriving mid morning last Friday to check her vitals and to take a sterile blood sample that was to be cultured and grown to find out what the bloody hell is happening with her. We should have some idea by Monday whats going on inside her - so keep your fingers crossed.

She is still eating, even if in small amounts, although Miss is now becoming quite sick of the plain and boring Lucerne/Oaten Chaff being offered and is looking for something a bit more exciting, even though she cant manage it at the moment. Iam still doing the Weetbix thing, with a bit of added apple puree to go with it which she tolerates. I have to admit that Lily's illness has been very labour intensive and I have been spending many hours around feed time x 3 times per day with her making sure that she is eating or walking around with Shorts, picking and grazing.

Evan and I have had many conversations about Lily in so far as are we being cruel and prolonging the inevitable? Or do we just sit tight and continue on the way we are going until she tells us what the hell is going on with her? Of course the answer is the second one and I will continue to nurse her until she gets better. Chris is still amazed that she had made it through the 40.5 temperature and is now stable, however, he has no answers for us.

It has been very interesting to watch the relationship between Lily and Shorts while Lily has been sick. Lily has been relying on Shorts for all kinds of moral support. Shorts has become very bossy and we have had to make sure that they are separated at meal times - not only because I want Lily to have every chance to eat how much she wants, but because Shorts seems to push her out of the way and tries to bite her. But, in saying all of that in Shorts' defence, I think that Lily has needed her to get through this.

Shortpants is very soon to be renamed, Largepants (especially those sort with the elasticized wasteband!!).

So, time is very limited for me at the moment - not to forget that I have been down with my own virus for the past few days. So, between me being sick and looking after Miss Lily both Evan and I have been a very poor correspondents to our friends and family.

In between everything else, lots of activity with people and horse movements:-

Summerino - Summer, our Pompeii Court mare, was retired from breeding 2 years ago as she was having some women's problems. However, we were contacted by a lady called Kassie who lives in Kilarney looking for an oldish and quiet mare that she could have as a pet (and to help eat away all the grass). Well it was a match made in heaven when Kassie met Summer and Summer has certainly gone to a beautiful home. When Kassie arrived to pick Summer up, she arrived with all new geat, halter, lead rope, fly veil, travelling boots etc etc all in purple. I have been told by Kassie that Summer will be getting a brand new purple rug for winter. Lucky that Summer likes purple! I got a phone call from Kassie the day after Summer arrived saying that Summer had made her way up to the back door and had put her head inside. Kassie said that she had to give her something, a carrot, so I think a routine has been started here. Kassie is delighted with Summer (and Iam sure that Summer is delighted with Kassie!).

Missymoo - we received a call from her new owner Wayne to say that he put a saddle on her and rode her today and was very happy with the result. He is looking to get her to the track at some stage in the future.

We also received a call regarding former Dodge colt, Ozman. Apparently he is growing up quickly and the new owners are very happy with him indeed.

Rusty (by Canadian Silver out of Mariko's Star), has been taken on by our next door neighbour Leo who had his half brother as well. Rusty is currently being broken in and will be a lead pony for Leo. It's nice to see that Rusty will have a good home and will be able to do something with his life, rather than just eat out our paddocks.

I have a feeling that Evan is quite happy with the fact that Rusty has gone..... yesterday afternoon while I was making up Lily's Weetbix, Evan drove down the back to the hayshed and both Rusty and Eric The Horse made a beeline for the open gate and took themselves off down to the end of Willowvale Road and took themselves up the trainline for some lush pickings. Would Rusty let Evan catch him? Not on your life. So, while Evan was down the end of the road (near the hayshed), I ran down to the front entrance and fixed up a barrier with some electric fence tape. After an hour of trying to get them to get off the traintracks and back down to the front of the property, we finally ushered them into the front yard. Now, would Rusty let Evan catch him now? No, not on your life. After bribing Eric The Horse with some choice Lucerne Hay, we managed to get him into one of the small crush yard paddocks, ending their exciting afternoon of fun (not!), Bribery and Corruption - you gotta love it!

It was then that Leo took Rusty back over to his place and poor old Eric The Horse went baresque when his buddy went away. Thank God that Eric has no voice. lol.
Eric The Horse has now become the gentleman friend of Trousers and Vera and they make quite a threesome down in their paddock.

(Uncle) Bob Hookey came and stayed at Massie Lodge last weekend for 3 days and it was good to catch up with him (although our Liver's are a little bit the worst for wear!).

We have also had Alan (Evan's brother) stay with us on Thursday night as his truck broke down at Stanthorpe (Alan normally does a run between Sydney and Brisbane). As he is a resident of NSW, he will be coming back up on Monday to stay with us until Wednesday when his truck will hopefully be fixed at around $45,000. OUCH! (Have you ever heard of a mechanic who has actually finished a job when they say they are going to?) lol

Did I mention that Ergon Energy have been up to their old tricks again with another power outage? What else is new?

*Yawn* well its time for me to hit the hay and go off into slumberland.

Until next time

Helen.

Today's Wednesday...

Has it really been just over a week since our life came to a halt with Lily's illness? Time surely flies.

The news continues to be optimistic with our baby. Today has been the first day when I have seen her attack her feed with some measure of enthusiasm. She even called out when Evan was doing the breakfast's this morning. I have continued on with the Weetbix and Molasses with Lily and it seems that Short's has quite a liking for this combination as well, so much so, that I have had to hide it from sight when Short's is around. I have also been giving Lily some Acidophillus powder in her Weetbix to help her gut after the massive doses of antibiotics that she has been through. She has finished with the Antibiotics now and its up to her. The scouring that was a huge concern seems to have minimised and whilst she is not "normal", she seems like she is on the right path.
I told Chris that I was giving her Weetbix and he had a fit. lol However, it seems to have made a huge difference with her.

She is a long way from being 100% however, we are certain that she has turned a very important corner in her recovery.
We are both very tired and exhausted from nursing our filly, in fact, I think I have caught some sort of virus gastric bug - after all the stress and exhaustion - YUK!

I received a lovely email from my good friend Sue Black the other day and in it she spoke about miracles.

Perhaps there is a miracle happening right here at Massie Lodge, right now?

I'd like to think that this is so.

Do you believe in miracles?

Miss Lily...

We have had quite a time over the past few days since my last post nursing our sick baby along. On Saturday we felt quite hopeless and it was left up to Miss Lily to determine her fate. Chris was most surprised to see her alive today. But yes, she is still with us but still quite sick. Her temperature is down to 38.5 today from 40.5 (Thursday), she has some appetite, some scouring and quite some way to go to get back to good health.

I have been spending alot of time with her in her stable with my fold up chair and book, reading to her and generally just being there. Iam sure that that has had nothing to do with her fighting whatever this bug is, but I didnt want her to do it alone. We have been trying to stimulate her appetite by syringing mush down her throat. Funny now when she sees me with a syringe she walks right away from me (I dont blame her!).

Today Chris drenched her with some Pepsil and some of Shortpant's fresh manure in an effort to put some good flora back into her gut. Let me just say, that that was pretty revolting. Especially when she sneezed it all all over us.

I can say now that we are cautiously optimistic. This filly has fought a huge battle so far to come back from being very, very ill. However, I guess time will tell. Lily has been very lucky to have the support of her friend, Shorts, who has been there for her and has been a good support system for our filly. Shorts thinks this is a good deal because her belly has grown bigger from all the extra hay that is around at the moment.

All the other residents here at Massie Lodge are very happy after consistent rain over the past month with the paddocks knee high in grass and the dams full to the brim.

We're not out of the woods yet, but there is some light on the horizon.

To all of our friends who have contacted us, thank you for your kind thoughts and support.
Helen & Evan.

Everything Has It's Season..

Maybe you are all wondering where I have been this past week?

We have a very sick filly here at Massie Lodge, and we have been nursing her and hoping that she might come through whatever this thing is that has struck her. Lily has been sick since Tuesday and Chris has no idea what has struck her. The prognosis is not good and we are fast approaching to that time when we have to look beyond what we want and decide what is the best thing for our beloved little filly.

Evan and I are wondering if we have walked over a Chinaman's grave or done something in our lives that requires some sort of celestial payback.

This year has certainly been our annis horribilis.

Silken Snooks

(My Beautiful Century Gal)

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there

Sarah McLachlan

Evan and I woke up this morning to find that Snooks had passed away during the night. We have no idea how or why. It could of been a snake, it could of been anything. She is now in the arms of the angels, may she find some comfort there.

Rest in Peace my beautiful, beautiful girl.

Hotel Massie...

um, not quite, but it certainly feels a bit like a hotel for horses and dogs with all the incoming and outgoing guests!

Outgoings....

Sweetie (Sweet Air) and her colt, Wee Jimmy, have left Massie Lodge for Oaklands to meet Pure Theatre (Pete). I have been told by very reliable sources that he likes to stay on for a cuddle.... hmmm, I cant imagine Sweetie having a bar of that! lol

Libby (Miss Indpendence) has gone to Noralla to meet up with Dust in the Wind.

Nanna (Splendid Feeling) will be on her way to Lyndhurst come Monday! We were asked by the owners of Honours List if we would send her to him, however, we declined as we wanted to get Billy's foot corrected now while the growth plate is still open. However, we were very flattered that they wanted her.

Red Dog. Yes, we found the owners of our ring-in after him being with us for nearly a week. His family came and picked him up this morning and were very happy to see him again. In fact, they live right down the other end of Willowvale Road (our road), so he was quite close to his home all the time.

Susie, Havachat and Missymoo will be on their way to the Goldcoast on Tuesday.

Incomings...

Lightning Angel (Throb) has come back to Massie Lodge for a short stay.

Kwila's Ambition (Kay) - will be coming back for a visit to Massie Lodge from Victoria and will go around to Lyndhurst to see Irish Royal.

Casualties....

Sunny - who has cut her foot (wretched child!).

Cindy - (Lightning Edge) - who came to us with a gaping wound on her leg... it has since healed over, however, she has an aversion to keep knocking it! She has now been put with Joey, Sunny and Gracie, and they are all a tight unit now.

Joey - (Joie de Victorie) - had a wee cut behind her foot, but it seems to have mended. We have certainly been keeping the makers of Cetrigen in business. lol.

Billy - (Colt by Canadian Silver our of Nanna) - front leg is starting to come nice and straight, thanks to Chris.

Humans...

Both tired after a hectic week and are not sure how they are going to manage next week with the MM sale. Oh well... we just take one day at a time and it all seems to work out.

Birds...

Busy nesting... great, just what we need more Peachface, AAAArgh!

This afternoon sees both of us just relaxing before the guests come in for dinner... crikeys, you would think that they would want to eat out wouldnt you? Mind you, in saying that, Iam sure that Nanna had visions of bringing Billy inside to dine when she stuck her head and foot in the doorway this morning.

LOL

What's This??

a new resident for Massie Lodge?

Well, let me say in my defence that I had nothing to do with him being here. Nor, did I play a part in him staying (I will not let a dog starve to death on my own property!).... he just sort of was here, and hasnt gone anywhere yet. (does that sound reasonable to you?).

He sort of seems to have made himself at home already, dont you think?

Yesterday while sitting in the study on the computer, I noticed some reddish brownish hair underneath my computer monitor outside the window... moving at a pace. I quickly got up and went outside to investigate. Nothing there. Was I imagining this? Was I finally going crazy?

At feed time I went to do the top feeds and heard Evan shouting at something... I went to investigate and there he was. And here he has stayed.

Bess, Lance and Mills aren't sure about this ... Matilda is thrilled to have another playmate and continually opens the door for him to come inside. Mind you, Iam not quite ready for that step (and neither are the other dogs).

Iam not sure whether our visitor to Massie Lodge is long term or short term. I guess he will tell us.

Evan says Iam a soft touch and this dog knows it. What a load of crap! .... Maybe.

Helen.

Sunday

is normally a day of rest (well it certainly is for young foals!). This is not entirely true. Sunday is usually a day that seems to go slower than every other day of the week. However, I woke up early this morning to hear cries from the lounge room... after becoming fully conscious I realised that Evan was watching the soccer (football?) and is not happy. Hmm. I guessed that the Aussies were not going very well and today was not going to be a rest day. lol

So, after watching the Aussie being beaten, we decided that we, the humans, would have breakfast first before the four paws and the four-hooved ones. Nanna was not happy about this state of affairs at all and was very vocal in telling us (in fact, neither was Bessie who had to wait an enormous amount of time for her morning biscuit). "Tough" I said.

It was a big day at Massie Lodge after all. Today we sold April to some lovely people in Toowoomba who I thought would really care for her. April was on her best behaviour and was a doll. Even getting on the 2-horse float.... what an angel... mind you, both Evan and the new owners were very patient with her, letting her get used to this strange new contraption. We got a call from them to say that she was a good girl on the way home and that she hooked straight into a feed... LOL, that's our girl.

*sigh* Yeah Iam feeling a little sad, but hey, thats what this is all about and I have reconciled myself to this. I have also reconciled with the fact that 3 of the girls will be going through the MM sale next week. Its a case of "having to move on..." and our business "continuing to evolve".

Sunny, Lily and Lenny are our next racing interests. Sunny will probably go up to Paul's at the end/at the start of the new year as we wanted to give her a good break before starting her career.

Chris will be back next week to do a little bit more work on Billy's front feet, and its better to get this work done before the growth plates lock. The Prognosis: Very Good.

It has been a very hectic year here at Massie Lodge... with lots of interesting characters with nice owners. I sat down and thought about whatelse would I want to be doing with my life and decided easily that there is no where else that Evan and I should be. Too easy.

Helen.

P.S.....

Could we have the theme from Jaws playing in the background to set the mood for this Postscript please? ....

We finish feeding up.... I come up from the back and do the normal stuff, like take the washing off the line that has to go on the vanishing couch in the kitchen.... Iam reefing 12 pairs of socks off the line and notice Bessie Merle sniffing around the old dryer on the back verandah.... hmm. this is mighty suspect.

I drop the washing inside and go and take a look behind the old dryer curious as to what Bessie was sniffing and our luck is in, there is something coiled up behind it!

"Oh No...." (Actually not the same words used, but use your imagination!)

"Um, Evan, I think we have company on the back verandah!"

Evan by now is sitting at his computer watching the latest fluctuations on IAS.

His face drops onto the floor.

"Um, Evan, I think there is a black snake behind the old dryer - Bessie is sniffing around there and is mighty interested!"

Evan stops what he is doing and looks at me. He gets up and puts on his long pants and boots and picks up the wire and an old steel post that we have lying around for such an emergency. He sits down and sips quietly the rest of his beer.... sheer terror is going through his mind at this point of time - and rightly so I would think!

I decide that I need some "Dutch Courage" from some alcohol and pour myself a Cognac... and quite a large one. Iam not frightened.... Iam not frightened..... well, on paper Iam not!

Ok, armed with his implements and Matilda standing by, Evan moves the old dryer - nothing happens. I am guarding the door to make sure that nothing gets inside.... from the inside, lol.

Another quick jerk of the dryer and something moves and drops to the ground...

"Oh Shit!" I exclaim from the doorway. (See, Iam not frightened...)

Ok, one more move and the dryer moves completely away from the wall.... quickly it comes out from behind the dryer and bolts on 4 legs away.....

Ok, so it wasnt a snake but an extremely large lizard.... not some Gecko.... but an extremely scary, large scaly, slimy lizard.

Meanwhile, Madam Matilda catches the lizard - Bessie and Lance by her side and throws her head from side to side.... its nearly dead. Lancey picks it up and finishes it off.

Yes that's right, Lancey.

We both came inside afterwards, both shaking ... the dogs pleased with their days work and are now comatosed on the floor.

See, this is Country living at it's finest! Who would want to miss out on this adventure?

???

Helen.

There is Something About...

waking up on a Saturday morning. The fact that you have to get up and feed the horses doesnt faze you. You dont mind the fact that you have to face Warwick town traffic and do the shopping. The fact is .... its Saturday!! So, after waking up and having my cup of tea left by Evan, I collect all the dogs and wander down the back - it's green, it's lush... its not stinking hot (yet?) and join in with the feeding up process.

One of the nicest things about Saturdays is the fact that its not a work day but a day to enjoy with Evan and the dogs and of course the horses!

Ergon Energy

A quick mention about Ergon Energy. I have written before (and whinged no end) about the outages that we have had and after the last one, I was sent the following email. Now you have to understand that the day the outage happened was a clear, sunny day... no storms, no rain...

I am sorry to say that I have to apologise again for the interruption to supply that occurred this afternoon.

You are quite correct in complaining that we have had more than our fair share of problems in recent times.

The problem today was with the East Warwick Sub Station, one of the 4 supplying the local area. A lightning arrestor blew - tripping the protection equipment at the substation causing the outage. This fault was not evident until testing of equipment was carried out after the supply failed to prove where the problem lay. It would appear that the arrestor would have been affected in the recent electrical storms, but did not fail until this afternoon. These arrestors as the name suggests, are designed to protect our equipment in the event of a lightning strike.

I certainly can understand your frustration and dissatisfaction.

As you are aware, most of the recent outages have been a result of problems with our high voltage feeder from Toowoomba. To give you an update on what we are doing, a helicopter patrol has been photographing each pole to help identify potential problems so they can be rectified before they occur. This is a proactive approach to make the system better. Once again, I am sorry for the inconvienance that you have experienced of late.

Hahaha..... one can only laugh at this.... "....system better..."

Comings and Goings...

No goings at the moment, mostly paddock changes!

Charlie (pictured above) has settled in back home nicely and is bossing Oscar around. Not even Lenny stands a chance with Uncle Charlie around and seeing those two together makes me laugh... Lenny doesnt stand a chance! Poor Oscar had his feet done last week and is a little sore, however, the ground is still nice and soft so its not so bad. Cindy keeps on knocking her leg, so we keep spraying it.

Gracie has moved in with Cindy as she was showing to be a bit lame, but seems to be better and will go back in with Joey and Sunny either tomorrow or Monday.

Libby leaves for Noralla this week to visit that hunk DITW.

It now seems that Sweetie (Sweet Air) will now be visiting Pure Theatre.

Nanna and Snooks will be visiting either Celestial Dancer or Irish Royal.

Its all happening!

As for Evan and I, Saturday and Sunday are our days off... a couple of drinks, some chippies and a few dvds.... what better way to relax? Oh and to turn the mobiles off .... I wish!!

I think its important that you have some human time.... as much as the horses play such a large role in our lives, you have to find the balance.

And that is the trick. Anyone have any ideas?

lol

Wednesday....

and it was finally time to bring in the professionals, to get the job done properly.... time to bring in the very experienced Victor SF model and her son to get in and get rid of some of that grass in the house paddock. Mind you we are nearly at the point of bringing in the cavalry, and I mean the serious professionals to get the grass into some sort of order. You want some serious mowing done? Bring in Trousers and Vera. lol

Today has been a very hectic day. We have had Adam over to do some trimming of horses hooves (Oscar, Hava, Moofa, Joey, Sunny and Gracie) and it took most of the morning. Iam sure that it was the hotest day ever today. I have no idea what attracts Adam to the farriering profession, I mean it would have be a very hot and demanding job. You cant wear shorts, you need sturdy shoes... every time Adam has finished with our lot, the sweat is pouring off him and his face is red (not that it is a reflection on our horses, lol) ....still Iam glad that we have found him as he is a great farrier, very good with the horses and a nice bloke as well. (Not like some of the prima donna's that we have come across since being up here at Massie Lodge).

Charlie arrived home today after 6 weeks with Paul Moody... and he has arrived back a very cheeky boy indeed. Its good to see him again. 6-8 weeks in the paddock and then its off to Wadham Park for Charlie boy.

Chris is back to Massie Lodge on Friday to consult on young Billy's foot which is a little turned out.

Sod of The Week

Definitely goes to Queensland Racing and the customer service representative who I spoke to there about QTIS registrations AAAAAAArghh!!!! to say that after I hung up I felt very frustrated and angry would be an understatement.

Well, time for me to sign off as I fear that we are about to have a thunderstorm and yes, you guessed it another blackout. Lucky us!

Hoorooo until then.

Helen.

See what I mean, what is glamorous about being a farrier? Although in saying that, without Adam we would be lost. Posted by Picasa
